Cold weather dries eyes

Low temperatures, high winds and UV light have detrimental effects on eye health, causing dry eye. 

“We all know our lips dry up when we are in a cold environment, but some people don’t know their eyes can dry out too”, says Chris Miller of Cambridge-based Altacor, a specialist ophthalmic products company.

Low temperatures and icy winds can dry out our eyes causing them to water as our tear glands try to compensate. Chris continues “We recommend wearing protective glasses or using lubricant eye drops without preservatives”. Alcohol the night before work could cause dry eye symptoms

New evidence suggests that alcohol leaves behind more than just a sore head. A recent study has shown the dehydrating effects of alcohol can irritate the eyes and cause symptoms of dry eye for people with otherwise healthy eyes.  Drinking water before bed and using lubricant eye drops without preservative could be the answer – Clinitas Soothe is available in small 0.5ml vials and contains enough for even the longest of parties!

Lee Woodward to head up launch of new products

As Altacor gears up for the launch of new products into the optical and pharmacy channels, it has appointed Lee Woodward as National Account Manager.

Formerly key account manager at Sauflon, Lee is looking forward to the challenge of his new role.

“This is an exciting time for Altacor, the company has a portfolio of specialist ophthalmic products under development. These products will help to support the entire treatment pathway from the hospital ophthalmologist through to the GP and high street optometrist, helping to grow the sector by creating new business opportunities.                                  

National Eye Health Week check for dry eye symptoms

Eye health check-ups aren’t just for people who need glasses, according to contact lens optician Nick Atkins from  PTR Consultants, speaking at the start of National Eye Health Week.

Nick discussed the bredth of health conditions that can be picked up by a check-up including diabetes and high blood pressure in a series of interviews broadcast on local and community radio stations across the country.

National Eye Health Week 2012

The third National Eye Health Week takes place between 17th and 23rd September 2012 and aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining good eye health and attending regular sight tests.
