Low temperatures, high winds and UV light have detrimental effects on eye health, causing dry eye.
“We all know our lips dry up when we are in a cold environment, but some people don’t know their eyes can dry out too”, says Chris Miller of Cambridge-based Altacor, a specialist ophthalmic products company.
Low temperatures and icy winds can dry out our eyes causing them to water as our tear glands try to compensate. Chris continues “We recommend wearing protective glasses or using lubricant eye drops without preservatives”. The multi-use 0.5ml vials of Clinitas Soothe are perfect to carry alongside your lip balm on a cold day. Continue reading →
Alcohol the night before work could cause dry eye symptoms
New evidence suggests that alcohol leaves behind more than just a sore head. A recent study has shown the dehydrating effects of alcohol can irritate the eyes and cause symptoms of dry eye for people with otherwise healthy eyes. Drinking water before bed and using lubricant eye drops without preservative could be the answer – Clinitas Soothe is available in small 0.5ml vials and contains enough for even the longest of parties!
Chris Miller of Cambridge-based Altacor, a specialist ophthalmic products company, explains that there is more to tears than just salty water. Continue reading →

Dry eye caused by Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) is one of the reasons why Venus Williams pulled out of the 2011 US Tennis open. Last weekend, at the Luxembourg open final, Venus won her first major title after a 31 month barren period.
Venus had been dealing with SS for many months prior to the diagnosis and this was the reason for her recent dip in form. She experienced dry eyes, dry mouth, fatigue, swelling and loss of hearing which all affected her ability to play tennis.
Altacor is working with health professionals to improve eye health
To help people ensure they are administering their eye drops correctly, Altacor has produced new advice sheets explaining the importance of a good technique and good hygiene. The company has also uploaded a training video to YouTube designed to help carers and others administer eye drops for elderly patients or for those who are unable to easily use eye drops themselves.
Although many people are told that sore or gritty eyes are caused by blocked tear ducts, to have both ducts obstructed is very uncommon. It is more likely that dry eye is the problem.
Dry eye is a term used for a variety of tear film disorders that result in the inadequate wetting of the eye, which includes insufficient tear production or too rapid evaporation. The punctal is a small opening on the inner eye lid and a plug is sometimes inserted to slow tear drainage, known as punctal occlusion. However, eye drops, such as Clinitas Soothe specifically developed for dry eye can often overcome the issue without more invasive treatment.
Administering Clinitas eye drops up to four times a day can reduce the symptoms of dry eye.
Eye health check-ups aren’t just for people who need glasses, according to contact lens optician Nick Atkins from PTR Consultants, speaking at the start of National Eye Health Week.
Nick discussed the bredth of health conditions that can be picked up by a check-up including diabetes and high blood pressure in a series of interviews broadcast on local and community radio stations across the country.
Watery eyes, particularly in windy, sunny or dry conditions, can be caused by dry eye syndrome, which can also be triggered by many medical conditions and taking certain medications.
Gareth Thomas, Head of Sales and Marketing at Altacor, says: “Lubrication of the eye is very sophisticated. The eye is bathed in a film of tears every time you blink. This film has a watery inside contained by an oily outside layer to reduce evaporation, and a lubricant on the innermost layer nearest the eye ball. These delicate layers can easily be disrupted by medication, including the contraceptive pill.”
The characteristic dry eye symptoms include scratchy or itchy feeling eyes that look red rimmed. However, the eye can also over compensate resulting in watery eyes. This makes the condition difficult to recognise despite being very easy to treat.
The third National Eye Health Week takes place between 17th and 23rd September 2012 and aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining good eye health and attending regular sight tests.
This year, Altacor are supporting National Eye Health Week by providing tips and advice for the safe administration of eye drops. We have produced two new information sheets and a new training video on this subject, please visit our National Eye Health Week 2012 page for more information.
Eye care is particularly important for golfers, who are exposed not just to glare and UV light but also to dust, pollen and wind – all of which can irritate the eyes. Many golfers suffer from watery eyes and are unaware that it may be a symptom of dry eye, which can also cause a scratchy, gritty or smarting feeling and can be easily relieved with eye drops.
